Or as cynical dukes put it "the Whiny Goth"
[inspired, incidentally, by discussions of La Belle Dame Sans Merci, and I'm on a "Flawed Archetype" kick at the moment]
Attributes: Unrequited love. There is little more tragic, more pitiable or, to the more cynical observer, more likely to cause somebody to act like a self absorbed adolescent. The Hopeless Romantic embodies unrequited love and is something of an essay in contradictions. He (or she, Hopeless Romantics come from both sexes) is usually fixated on his beloved, but is usually also obsessed with himself. The Hopeless Romantic makes everything about His Broken Heart. This archetype has some similarities to the Pilgrim, and indeed some would be hopeless romantics may wind up on the path of the Pilgrim or even the Hunter. The key to Hopeless Romanticism is that touch of self obsession...
You may never snap out of it, you must always be moping about somebody. You may go from moping ofver one person to moping about another without breaking type (indeed some Hopeless Romantics are terribly fickle). The biggest no-no for hopeless romantics, of course is to actually have their affections returned.
Dark rooms. Mirrors. The Three of Swords. Poetry.
Suspected Avatars in History:
Probably 90% of romantic poets, at one time or another. You could make a good case for Beethoven during his Immortal Beloved period.
1%-50%: Like the Pilgrim, you may name one skill which will help you either win or exalt the name of the object of your affections, with a successful Avatar: the Hopeless Romantic roll you have flagged the skill and can flip flop rolls from now on.
You do not spoil the skill for the purposes of this channel if you switch your affections from one subject to another. You do spoil a skill if you ever just give up on somebody with no replacement, or if you actually do win thier affection.
51%-70%: The thought of your beloved sustains you. With a successful Avatar: the Hopeless Romantic roll you can go without sleep for a night, drink for a day or food for three days without any penalty.
71%-90%: This is where that whole "making it all about you" thing kicks in. As long as you're talking about your Terrible Unrequited Love you may substitute your Avatar skill for any social skill. Great for picking people up, keeping guards distracted and, of course, just stroking your ego.
91%+: At this point you actually do start to bend reality. Any unnatural phenomena which occur around you are twisted to in some way reflect your love. Spontaneous Unnatural phenomena could occur as often as once a day around you, and are likely to occur any time you do something to try to win or exalt your beloved.
One final note: Since avatars never have to be sincere, a Hopeless Romantic doesn't have to give a damn about their "beloved", they just have to pretend to. They do, however need to be plausible, you have to name sombody you could realistically be attracted to. Similarly you can in theory do all kinds of odd things in the name of your beloved, but once again it has to be plausible, even if it's plausible in a sick and twisted way.
